Sorry to take so long to get back to you. I'm seriously thinking about having myself cloned. :-) I asked the Man of the House about this since he actually makes wine and beer. He wondered if you put the full amount of vodka in. The alcohol content in the vodka should keep all the nasties away.

Wadda - I don't think that the volume of mine changed at all. But then again, as you can see by the photo, I did have a little room. How much room did you have in the jar? Since this isn't a wine or beer there isn't fermentation. That's what usually causes accidents like the one you describe. Did it foam or bubble? If so, that means that fermentation was going on and that's not what you want for this.

Thanks for the review!
I've been yearning for these buns since I was a kid and a local olace in Birmingham used them at the counter. I remember they toasted all sides of the outside and it was outstanding!
I dont own a breadmaker, and so far, all my explorations in baking have been in the "no knead" style. But I can say, every loaf has been a huge hit! I might break down and buy this pan, my first baking purchase (well flour based baking yaknow) and try a shrimp salad sandwich w hotdogs until I find a place that sells monkfish, I find loads of recipies that say that monkfish tastes just like lobster, and this is something I need to try!

Thanks for the review, years after posting, it's still helping people. (BTW to Ken, while your correct about the nature of hot dogs, if you buy Kosher hot dogs, your pretty safe, thats all we buy, and at Costco, they are very reasonable)

Thank you for these contributions.

I was looking around on this subject since yesterday, at Derby (UK) Market Hall, I picked up a 'Gammon Shank' which looked for all the world the exact same thing as what we usually know as a 'Hock'. I note that it was packed in Greater Manchester and that elsewhere on the Web I have seen that somebody from the North-East of England also knows a 'Hock' as a 'Shank', so it may be a case of regional taste in vocabulary over here as well as on your side of the Atlantic. We're on more or less the borderline between the English Midlands and the North of England here so we may be at the very northern edge of the area where the word 'Hock' is used.

Being something of a Soul Music fan I of course am aware that Ham Hock is a staple thereof.

To us there is a huge flavor difference between "smoked ham hocks" and "smoked pork hocks". The pork hock is much more bland and does not flavor soup like the ham hock. They are very hard to find here in South Texas. Time was they were in all the stores, now just pork hocks and most by Tyson?

Good luck

They have them at the Whole Foods in Ravenna (in Seattle). I just got one the other day to use in an African sweet potato soup, and it was excellent.

Anatomically, the hock is roughly equivalent to the ankle and foot, whereas the shank is the pig's calf, so it's meatier. The shank I got at Whole Foods was smoked as well, so it made the whole house smell like delicious.
