Win The Race

sailboat race

“Ride on! Rough-shod if need be, smooth-shod if that will do, but ride on! Ride on over all obstacles, and win the race!” ~ David Copperfield by Charles Dickens

Yesterday the Seattle Yacht Club had race from Seattle around Protection Island near Port Townsend.  These are some of the participants as sen from Fort Warden.

Super Bowl 2011

Tomorrow is the Super Bowl.   It’s a big event for the Man of the House.  As such, the Super Bowl menu has been discussed in depth.

The 2011 Super Bowl sandwich is both a bit of an upset and marks the return of an old favorite.  The upset is that no liverwurst will be in this year’s sandwich.  None!  It’s hard to imagine the Man of the House not eating liverwurst on Super Bowl day.  What’s the replacement you ask?  Corned beef!  Right now our house is filled with the aroma (or fumes if you dislike the dish) of corned beef and cabbage.  The leftover corned beef is going into the mighty Super Bowl sandwich.

The bread used in the sandwich marks the return of an old favorite, cheese and onion bread.   Since the game will be in mid-afternoon I’ll actually make the bread in the morning so that it will be at it’s ultimate freshness.

The sandwich will be accompanied by Mom’s Shrimp Salad.

Snowapocalypse and Swain’s

The good news is that we didn’t have a snowapocalypse.   There was some snow and some rain.  Then there was more rain, but it was fine.

The bad news is that the Port Townsend Swain’s is closing.

I’ve written about Swains before.  It was where I went when my hair dryer died.  We got our drain stopper there.  If you need a non-grocery item in Port Townsend, your best bet is (or was) to go Swain’s.

And we’re not the only ones that are going to miss Swain’s.

There’s a large sign outside the store.  People are writing messages on it.  They say things like “Thanks” and “We’ll miss you.”

Inside there’s a 30% off everything sale.  However the store was in trouble for a few months and hasn’t really been restocking.  Already about half of the store looks like this . . .

There’s talk of another retailer taking over the space.  I hope they do.  I hope they stock hair dryers.  But I’ll always miss Swian’s.

Snowapocalypse?

According to weatherman extraordinaire Cliff Mass, we may have a snowapocalypse next week.  It’s too early to say for sure, but it could be big.

As the folks at the National Weather Service state,

STARTING WEDNESDAY THROUGH THE END OF NEXT WEEK…THERE IS THE POTENTIAL FOR A WIDESPREAD HEAVY SNOW EVENT SOMEWHERE IN WESTERN WASHINGTON. GREAT UNCERTAINTY INHERENTLY EXISTS IN A FORECAST WITH THIS MUCH LEAD TIME…AND IT IS POSSIBLE THAT A HEAVY SNOW SITUATION WILL NOT DEVELOP. CHECK BACK LATE THIS WEEKEND OR ON MONDAY FOR THE LATEST ON THIS POTENTIAL HIGH-IMPACT EVENT. IF THE POTENTIAL STILL EXISTS AT THAT TIME…THEN THE DRY WEATHER ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY WOULD AFFORD AN EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY TO PREPARE.

Did you note their “excellent opportunity to prepare” line?  Just because they’re bossy, doesn’t mean that they’re wrong.  I guess it’s time to stock up on groceries and make sure that we’ve got the makings for hot chocolate.

Merry Christmas

We only got our tree up a few days ago.  But it was well worth the wait.  It doesn’t feel like Christmas until the tree is up.

I hope that you and yours have the happiest of holidays!

Christmas was close at hand, in all his bluff and hearty honesty; it was the season of hospitality, merriment, and open-heartedness; the old year was preparing, like an ancient philosopher, to call his friends around him, and amidst the sound of feasting and revelry to pass gently and calmly away. ~ The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens
